“Mr. Pinot, I am tired of handouts! Can we please play Kahoot?”

If you think integrating technology will distract students and torment educators, you MUST think again!

Students already are interested and engaged in technology. As teachers we can capitalize on such motivation for educational purposes. Incorporating social media as well as technology devices can enhance learning and give students the opportunity to experience global learning. Technology gives you that edge.

Many times students would rather learn the content in the lesson plan by interacting with their classmates in groups using their cellular devices to connect to Kahoot. Kahoot is a tool for using technology to administer quizzes. It is a game based classroom response system played by the whole class in real time. Multiple choice questions are projected on the screen. Students answer the questions with their smartphone, tablet or computer.

Why integrate technology in the classroom?

Creates active learners

Technology devices encourage self-directed learning rather than passive learners. Interactive learning can help engage students in conceptual subject where the content can be viewed as unappealing.   Instructional strategies for active learning can take many forms, technology in particular provides opportunities for students to simulate new ideas and global concepts. Students can also experiment with the idea of self-expression. Take a look at this…

Encourages growth

I have learned throughout the years that students do not learn the same way. Technology gives you that accommodation. With virtual lesson plans teachers can provide individualized instruction for all types of students. This gives the opportunity to learn at their own pace. Additionally, internet access provides the students with resources to become better researchers.

Peer Collaboration

Is the idea that involves students working in small groups to discuss concepts, or find solutions to given tasks. When students collaboration not only they get to know more about themselves but have equal opportunities to participate and communicate their understanding of things. It is the same with teachers. When we collaborate we open up a new world of innovating ideas. Collaboration between students contributes to student achievement.

Preparing for the real world

Technology is everywhere. Our first interaction with technology starts the moment we wake up. Educating students on how to use technology will better prepare them for real world experiences. Students are quickly to realize technology is what drives the world today. Students can now take advantage of many different things with one simple touch on their cellphone’s screen.

Creates successful teachers

Teachers have the flexibility to have more opportunities to interact with students on a one-on-one basis thanks to technology. Aside from freeing up time, as educators integrating technology is key. Adding technology into the lesson plan is only the first step. As educator we must have a system in place. We need to teach our students how to be responsible users of technology providing them with adequate training. The idea is to integrate technology to expand our student’s horizons.

Over the last year I have seen an increase in the use of technology in our classrooms.  Many times our students are more familiarized with technology than we are.  Many of us need a little help along the way in understanding how to adapt and use technology.  Especially our very well experienced teachers.  Other teachers are still looking to have access to materials and devices that may very well help create a technology  integrated lesson plan.

I have come across teachers who believe technology does not belong in a classroom setting. The new teachers like me think technology is a MUST in a classroom setting. Experienced as well as new teacher have to find a common ground. Overall, as teachers we want our students to succeed and part of our responsibility is to prepare the way for students to succeed. What a better way than integrating technology in the learning environment.
